Initial Thoughts on DeAndre Jordan Offer Sheet
I believe the Clippers are going to match the 4-year, $40M offer sheet that the Warriors offered to restricted free agent center, DeAndre Jordan. But just for kicks, let’s assume the Clippers don’t:
Using the amnesty on Charlie Bell, an expiring contract, is shortsighted. The Warriors would have about $19M committed to the center position with Biedrins on board. Add in Monta’s $11M and David Lee’s $13M, the Warriors are committing $43M to those four players.
And they’re still only a borderline playoff team.
With so much money committed to those four players and with Stephen Curry’s extension looming in two seasons, how are the Warriors going to be in a financial position to improve the roster. This is what I wrote about earlier this week. They are headed toward being outstandingly mediocre with really no way of further improving the team. As Steve Kerr and Rich Cho have mentioned, that’s not a good position to be in. The worst, actually, in my opinion.
I need some clarification on this: Do the Warriors have to officially amnesty Charlie Bell to offer the contract to DeAndre Jordan or does the amnesty become official once he officially becomes a Warrior?
If it’s the former and the amnesty is official just to offer the contract, then that’s even worse. The Warriors would essentially be forfeiting their amnesty for the chance at DeAndre Jordan. And assuming the Clippers match, which is a good bet, the Warriors are left with Lee and Biedrins’ contracts and without their amnesty.
